Canadian poet, essayist, translator and classicist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy recognized her for a body of work that moves between poetry, prose, criticism and translation while placing ancient texts in conversation with modern experience.

The academy’s citation praised Carson’s “bold and inventive oeuvre” and said her playful dialogue with the classical tradition has created new forms for contemporary literature. The award carries 12 million Swedish kronor and is among the world’s most prominent literary honours.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson studied and later taught classics. Books including Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband and Nox resist easy classification, combining scholarly attention with experiments in voice, structure and visual form. Her translations of ancient Greek writing are also treated as a central part of her creative practice.

Carson joins Alice Munro among Canadian recipients of the literature prize. The recognition places a writer associated with formal risk and close reading on a global stage, while drawing renewed attention to Canadian poetry and to work that crosses the conventional borders between academic and creative writing.

A Nobel Prize can expand an author’s readership, but Carson’s achievement is not reducible to the award. The academy has recognized a long project of asking what old stories can still reveal when their forms are broken apart and rebuilt for the present.
