The Canadian is an independent newsroom covering the stories that shape this country — from Parliament Hill to the shop floor, from the North to the neighbourhoods in between.
What we do
Our politics desk follows Parliament, provincial legislatures, public institutions, elections, and the decisions that shape daily life. Business covers work, markets, housing, trade, and the economy; technology examines Canadian innovation, digital policy, privacy, and the platforms people rely on.
Culture reports on books, film, music, media, and the ideas moving through the country. Health coverage follows public-health decisions, medical research, access to care, and the systems connecting patients and practitioners. World reporting is selected for its direct relevance to Canada and Canadians.
News, analysis, and opinion are labeled distinctly. Readers should never have to guess whether a piece reports verified events, explains their meaning, or argues a point of view.
A national view
Canada cannot be understood from one city. We look for consequences and voices across provinces, territories, rural communities, major metropolitan areas, and the North.
National coverage also means taking regional differences seriously: the same federal policy, economic shift, or health challenge can land very differently from one community to the next.
How we work
Every story is reviewed and edited before publication. When we summarize or draw on other reporting, we distinguish that work from original reporting.
When we get something wrong, we fix it — openly. Our corrections policy explains how.
Independent by design
The Canadian is built as an independent publication. Editorial priorities, story selection, headlines, and conclusions are determined by the newsroom, not by advertisers, political organizations, sources, or outside partners.
